My History
Passionate about my work in service of scholars and their future, I am driven to ensure that I bring the best out of each scholar by honoring their voices and understanding their purpose. Learn more about my teaching philosophy and my background below.
Teaching Philosophy
My educational philosophy centers on fostering student agency and empowering learners to actively control their educational journey. When students possess agency, they become integral participants in their learning experiences, cultivating a sense of pride and accomplishment in mastering their disciplines. This approach not only enhances classroom proficiency but also inspires students to pursue knowledge and understanding beyond the academic setting.
As both an educator and an active member of the community I teach in, I am acutely aware of the educational and technological disparities faced by marginalized students in the United States. In addressing these disparities, I employ diverse instructional strategies that bridge classroom learning with real-world relevance. As a social studies instructor, I connect historical events to contemporary life, demonstrating to students the ongoing relevance of the past and their role in shaping their communities and cultures.
Furthermore, I promote student agency through project-based assessments rather than relying solely on standardized testing. Recognizing the unique needs and preferences of each student, I encourage creative and critical expression through mediums such as writing, poetry, visual arts, and music. By allowing students to choose how they demonstrate their learning, they become deeply invested in the subject matter, integrating their talents and creativity to explore historical events and contemporary issues.
As an advocate for students who have been marginalized by larger society, I understand the multifaceted challenges they encounter both within and beyond the educational realm. My commitment as an educator is not only to make education accessible but also to nurture a sense of ownership in learning. I aim for students to perceive education as a foundation they can build upon throughout their lives, contributing to personal growth and the advancement of their communities.
